The global shortage of cybersecurity professionals has reached critical levels, with nearly 1 million positions unfilled across Europe and an estimated 4 million globally. To address this pressing gap and promote inclusive employment in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United States Department of State and the Government of the Czech Republic have launched the "Cybersecurity Without Barriers" initiative.

Implemented by leading organizations in Bosnia and Herzegovina “People in Need” and "NEŠTO VIŠE" this pioneering project aims to empower persons with disabilities by equipping them with the skills needed to excel in the cybersecurity sector. By training and supporting individuals with disabilities in cybersecurity expertise and assisting 20 employers in adopting measures to overcome barriers hindering the employability of persons with disabilities, the initiative seeks not only to provide meaningful employment opportunities but also to contribute significantly to reducing the cybersecurity talent shortage in the country.

“Leaders need to urgently address Bosnia and Herzegovina’s strategic, legislative, and regulatory approach to cybersecurity. In doing so, they will both improve security and facilitate the creation of numerous jobs in the IT sector. This project will provide the training for an untapped talent pool that is able and ready to join the 21st century workforce and support increased cyber resiliency for the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said H.E. Michael J. Murphy, U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The cybersecurity field offers a unique opportunity for individuals with disabilities who often face barriers to employment. With its flexibility for remote work and high demand for skilled professionals, the sector is well-suited to harness the untapped potential of this talented group.

"When hiring people with disabilities, the focus should be on their skills and potential, not on limitations. Employers play a significant role in removing these barriers." stated H.E. Jana K. Lolić Šindelková, Czech Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The "Cybersecurity Without Barriers" project represents a significant step toward addressing both the cybersecurity professional shortage in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the employment challenges faced by persons with disabilities. Through collaboration with employers, institutions, and key stakeholders, the project aims to create sustainable pathways for inclusion and professional growth in Bosnia and Herzegovina's cybersecurity landscape.
