Bosnia and Herzegovina officially launched its ambitious national project, "Developing a National Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Plan, Methane Roadmap, and Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) Framework".

The project, funded by the UNEP-convened Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), aims to support the country’s ambitious commitments to the Global Methane Pledge by reducing methane and other short-lived climate pollutants. These pollutants are not only critical contributors to global warming but also heavily impact local air quality and public health.

"Today’s project launch marks a significant step in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s journey towards a greener and more sustainable future. The CCAC’s collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations and our NGO partners will help us chart a path forward to reduce emissions and improve air quality, ultimately benefiting the health and well-being of BiH citizens."
- Martina Otto, Head of the CCAC Secretariat

The project’s main components were outlined during the event, with a focus on developing a comprehensive short-lived climate pollutants reduction plan, a methane roadmap, and a robust monitoring framework. These efforts will align Bosnia and Herzegovina’s environmental policies with international climate agreements, including the Global Methane Pledge and the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).

"This project is not just about reducing emissions—it’s about creating a new paradigm for how we think about environmental responsibility in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

By prioritizing short-lived climate pollutants like methane, we are taking actions that will deliver rapid results, not just in the fight against global warming, but in improving public health and reducing healthcare costs related to pollution."
- Amila Šatara, Project Coordinator, People in Need BiH

"Effective collaboration between NGOs and state institutions is vital for achieving impactful results. By combining local knowledge with global expertise, we can amplify the positive effects on public health and environmental protection,” added Tim Jenkins, Country Director, People in Need BiH. “This partnership is key to ensuring sustainable climate action and improving the quality of life for communities across Bosnia and Herzegovina."

The project is funded by the UNEP-convened Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and People in Need (PIN) and it's implemented by a consortium that includes the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, People in Need, the Center for Energy, Energy Efficiency, and Environment (CEEO), and the Society for Tourism and Environmental Protection (STEP). The collaborative effort aims to foster sustainable development, improve air quality, and reduce the health risks associated with air pollution.

The event concluded with a strong commitment from all stakeholders to drive forward the project’s goals and make tangible progress in reducing BiH’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
